Haiti Situation - How can we help??

By raghu - Posted on 15 January 2010

Did you know that Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere? Sitting far from the disaster it is easy for us to shrug it off as just another natural calamity, but the extent of the loss this devastation has caused is way beyond any text can explain or any picture can portray.

Having been the lucky ones to have all the luxuries of life, let us spare a moment to think about Haiti's unfortunate people that have been struggling to come to terms after this cruel tryst with destiny.

The worst earthquake to hit the Caribbean in 200 years - a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck near the Haitian Capital of Port-au-Prince has left an indelible scar on the face of this earth. Let us step up to help in any way we can - clothes drive, Food drive, monetary donations...anything is most welcome.

Please add to this forum indicating if you are available to volunteer in your area (Sunnyvale, Fremont, Pleasanton...) for a Clothes Donation Drive. If you have more ways in which you can participate/volunteer, do let us know through this forum.

I agree that the most effective way is to help by financial donation. Wall Street mentioned that several hundred sites have popped up seeking donation and they could be spammers. Exercise caution while going through website. Contribute through reliable sites. UNICEF assures that 100% of donation goes to relief activities by absorbing the administrative costs by its US funds.

Ways to Give
Host a Personal Fundraising Page »
Donate Online » (reliable sites please)
Shop our Gift Catalog » (Unicef)
Set Up a Monthly Donation » (UNICEF)
Donate Stock » (through reliable sources)

I was reading ar article by Leonard Pitts Jr. of Miami Herald. He was saying that 'Sometimes the earth is cruel, and you have no choice but to accept that as part of the bargain called life." However, we can't let it go with that statement. It is where human beings must come together in protecting the human kind.

Join us in helping the innocent victims of Haiti by donating financially or in other possible ways.

Thanks

Latest I heard on radio is that there is a big shortage in medicines as they are not getting supplies as expected.
People are dying because of not getting proper medicine and first aid. May be we can help with this. I am not sure whether we can buy and donate medicines to Red Cross.

I can help from Sunnyvale area.

Good Idea Raghu. I will ask my friends and co-wokers. It's funny how most of us think our problem is the biggest in the whole world. I feel bood donation is also good idea. Is it possible to arrange from KKNC ???. Many want to do it . But they do not take time to visit Blood donation centers ( I am perfect example ). I do not know the procedures to organize blood donation drive. I can call Red cross and check if you want me too.

Gowthami

Based on some research, it looks like, at this moment, the best way to help is to donate financially to organizations/thru companies where there is $-$ program.

WAYS THE COMMUNITY CAN HELP
You can help the victims of countless crises around the world each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need. The American Red Cross honors donor intent. Here are the ways to give: You can make a donation by:
Making a secure online contribution and choose the International Response Fund.
Calling 1-877-727-6771 or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish)
Mailing your donation to American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter, 2731 N. First Street,San Jose, CA 95134
Texting "Haiti" to 90999 to donate a ten dollar donation to the Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti. Your donation is automatically added to cell phone bill.
In-Kind Donations
The American Red Cross is unable to accept donations of food, clothing or medicine for people affected by disasters because of the large amount of valuable manpower to process items, the logistical difficulties in storing and delivering these items, as well as the extreme expense in shipping goods. The most effective way to help the people affected by this disaster in affected areas is to make a financial donation to the American Red Cross International Response Fund.
