Review: Naanu Nanna Kanasu (2010)
Madhu Krishnamurthy - Fri, 06/11/2010 - 23:40
Title: naanu nanna kanasu (Me and my dream)
Starring: Prakash Rai, Ramesh Aravind, Achyuthkumar, Seethara, Veena Sunder, Rajesh, Sihikahi Chandru and others.
Direction: Prakash Rai
Screen play, Dialogues: Prakash Rai
Photography: Ananth Urs
Produced by: Duet Movies and Media House Studio
Verdict - An excellent entertaining movie which explores the love a father has for his daughter which gets tested when she becomes an independent adult. It has good funny dialogues, great acting, superb photography and nice music.
Score: 9.5 out of 10
While watching Kannada or Indian movies, have you got bored of the stale adventures of the hero and heroine who fight against all obstacles and eventually teach us that love conquers all - that too not before the most stupid misunderstandings between the lovers themselves.? Have you got sick of how the hero-heroine gyrate in response to gross lyrics and head banging music? Now don't even get me started on movies that try hard to prove that in order to protect our personal dignity and survive in this unruly world, each of us men need to be the equivalent of a Jackie Chan or a Bruce Lee capable of beating the pulp out of twentyfive knife and chain wielding thugs !!
Yes.We badly need an antidote to such movies. We need a movie where the story is about some thing we can relate to, where the characters speak the kind of lines that are spoken around us? Still better, why can't the hero or heroine be in situations which are plausible and natural such that we the audience can relate to it?
Well, seek no more. Such an antidote has arrived. It is the Kannada movie Naanu nanna kanasu directed by Prakash Rai.
Prakash Rai (also known as Prakash Raj) is a popular national award winning actor well known in South Indian cinema. With this movie he has given a stellar performance as a director too.
The story is very new compared to what gets shown on Kannada movie screens. It is about the beautiful relationship and love a father enjoys with his daughter. The story is told by the father as he recollects one joyous event after another involving him and his daughter kanasu right from her birth. The story warmly unfolds as the girl grows from a baby to a toddler, to an adolescent and steps into adulthood. All along the father has been fully engaged in every walk of his daughters life and enjoying it. We also see very humane tendencies displayed by the father. It is to be admired that the story explores some very sensitive aspects like the father's resentment at his little baby growing up to be an independent individual.
In this movie, Prakash Rai has adopted the original Tamil movie (Abhiyum Naanum by Radha Mohan) and transformed it into a movie which fits the Kannada environment very well. Ramesh Aravind, Sihi Kahi Chandru, Seethara and Veena Sunder are very good in their roles
Prakash Rai shines in the role of the dad who tempers his desire to make his girl a strong and capable individual while at the same not wanting to let her out of his circle of love and influence. He has given a really genuine and bold performance bringing out his character's vulnerability, immaturity and fatherly love. His transition from a tense father to a relieved father is very nuanced and convincing.
AchyuthaKumar shines in his role as Patel and executes some juicy moments with assurance and confidence. I am always thrilled when young actors take charge of their role and hold their own. Amoolya as kanasu has given a dignified performance and personifies the role of the adorable daughter. Rajesh Nataranga's portrayal of the role of the supportive friend is very likeable and refreshing.
There are some very colorful picturization of songs with Hamsalekha providing interesting lyrics and fine music. The photography is pleasing. The dialogues are very natural, meaningful, sharp, funny and heartfelt. The song sung by Kailash Kher 'ondu maamara' has a haunting melody and is sure to be a hit.
I liked the cool and confident attitude displayed by Jogi when interacting with his prospective in-laws. This is in keeping with the times and shows the audience a character that has real personality as against the traditional tough guy hero who never-the-less exhibits over the top humility and modesty in front of elders. (I mean the dude who does not forget his culture of folding his hands and stands respectfully in front of guru hiriyaru).
The movie succeeds in being very entertaining while being realistic and natural. The movie demonstrates that a wholesome entertaining movie can be made while being highly artistic too. Going by the box office news, people are coming to watch this movie in large numbers in Karnataka.
So, Gandhinagar, you cannot give this excuse anymore. "We make crude cheap entertainment because if we make clean realistic movies, our Kannadigas do not come to watch it". I have always maintained that this is just taking the easy way out. I know there is always a market for movies which appeal to our base instincts. If people want to cater to it, that's fine. But if they channel their enormous resources they can make movies which they themselves can feel proud about.
I submit there is a huge segment of Kannada film goers who are desirous of watching well made movies. Let's not forget that the most popular and commercially successful director in Kannada is till today Puttanna Kanagal who appealed to such film goers. If Kannada can produce high quality literature, there is no reason why we cannot make high quality movies on our own. As can be see with movies made all over the world, it is the story and script which is the foundation for a good movie. I think we need more people like Prakash Rai who have the desire and confidence to make good movies based on good stories and strong scripts.
naanu nanna kanasu is the kind of movie Kannadigas deserve and have been craving for it. It is a very nice movie which must be watched by all kala rasika kannadigas especially fathers with daughters.

Two Words. SPB ROCKS!!
Madhu Krishnamurthy - Wed, 05/26/2010 - 06:28
As I close my eyes and hear the jumpy tune of 'Santhoshakke haadu' (Geetha 1983) with its foot thumping rhythm, I see the image of the bearded man in a hurry, the daring Shankar Nag in his dark glasses. When I hear the classic 'elliruve manava kaaduva roopasiye' I can only picture Ananth flying his helicopter over thick forests. If I listen to 'naa haadalu, neevu haada beku' from kalla kulla the picture that comes to mind is that of Sahasa Simha Vishnuvardhan. But still, one key ingredient in all these songs is the voice of perhaps the most versatile and beloved singer SP Balasubramhanyam. SPB or Balu as he is lovingly called is the most successful play back singer in the South Indian film industry. He is definitely the one singer who has given the most popular songs in Kannada film industry. SPB himself has talked about the love he has received from Kannadigas and has shared his love for the Kannada film industry.(See video link at the end) He has given his musical voice to all prominent actors in the Kannada film industry including Dr. Vishnuvardhan, Anant Nag, Shankar Nag, Ambarish, Suresh Heblikar, Srinath, Rajesh, Dwarakish, Narasimha Raju. In the movie Bahaddur Gandu, the song 'gandu endhare gandu, bhoopathi gandu' sung by SPB is picturised on Dr. Raj. So SPB seems to have left his mark across the board in Kannada movies.
Though not classically trained SPB has the talent and the spirit to bring out the most creative musical performance. In fact one of the advantages of his lack of classical background is that it gives him the freedom to be unbound by the framework of classical music.
I had the opportunity to see him live at the Kannada musical night on May 9th at Hayward California. Most of the songs he sang were my favorites. It was somewhat reassuring to see 1200 other people like the same songs as I did and respond they way I would. SPB delivered the program professionally. They did not waste time between songs. SPB would add tidbits about various songs and established an affectionate bond with the crowd. After doing the traditional somber songs, he sang jeeva vene (Hombisilu) the popularity of which is a great symbol of Kannadigas good taste in music. Then SPB chose my favorite "Entha Soundarya nodu" from mathu tappada maga composed by Ilayaraja. The background music (BGM) in this song reminds me of the BGM in nagu naguta nali nali - the ever green PBS song for Dr. Raj from Bangarada Manushya composed by GK Venkatesh. That is not at all surprising since Ilayaraja arranged the music for over 200 Kannada films as an assistant to GKV.
During the program SPB did sing many melodious songs including 'jotheyali jothe jotheyali(Geetha), ‘naguva nayana’ (Pallavi Anu Pallavi). They were all melodious and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But I love SPB for his jovial and cool spirit which he brings into some of his songs. I feel SPB is the only singer who has established a type of singing which is very original and creative. It is not just his musical ability I am talking about here. It is his ability to innovate in singing which is so distinctively SPB. That makes his songs more entertaining. I honestly feel, it is very rare to find a singer who creates his own style, sticks to it and is successful. I feel most of the singers of the current generation are some what normalized. They do not have a very original style of singing. They try to follow in the lines of legends like Rafi or Kishore. Initially SPB was trying to follow in Ghantasaala's footsteps but luckily for us music lovers, he got out of it and established his own domain where he innovated as he desired and people have simply loved it.
There are the classic SPB hits which are so universally appealing that they speak for themselves. I am referring to Neera biTTu (Hombisilu), aakashadinda dharegilidu rambhe , maamaravello , nammora mandara huvve. These songs are a great joy to listen to. Apart from these, for an example of SPB's creativity, listen to this song from Maagiya Kanasu. The song "ellelloo neene, elliruve jaane" I get goose bumps when he says ellellu neene ehE eHe, elliruve jaane ohO ohO". Another good example is 'hema hema. naakondla naaku' (Shubha mangala) Similarly the rustic songs 'notadaage nageya meeti' and 'teranEri ambaradaage" from Parasangada Gende Thimma" set a new trend in Kannada films resulting in songs like “entha marulayya idu”, "kempaadavo ella kempadavo". There are many such examples including those where SPB displays his talent for comedy in songs. "vahare mere murgha' (Sipaayi Ramu), "nammoor nage naanobne jaana' and "barhtale kanasina raani" are a few of the good funny songs.
SPB also has distinguished himself with his unique talent to morph his voice to suit the actor on whom the song is being picturised. In one of his interviews he says that it is easy for him to mould his voice to suite comedic actors because they have a very distinct mannerism and so it makes sense to imitate their voice. In the case of the regular heroes of Indian movies he says he imitates their style of speaking and adopts it in his singing. This explains why SPB's voice seems to suite a wide range of actors. It is worth noting that he does not try to imitate the actor’s voice as much as the rhythm in their speaking.
It was the first time that I saw SPB live and it was a thrilling experience. I was totally in awe at this great talent who at 65 still sings like he sang 30 years ago. How much can we be in awe of a person who still has the spirit to sing jumpy numbers, romantic poems and who can rock the audience and drive them crazy with his ability to sing cool romping numbers. Two songs towards the end of the concert were very well chosen and drove the audience wild and screaming. He gave a small tidbit about Hamslekha and his song about places in Mysore. The audience smelled what was coming and hooted with excitement. And them SPB put the mike near his mouth and belted in a high pitch ‘are yaarri hedarkoLLoru, bedarkolloru’. The voice shot out like an arrow from great depth and went flying and weaving through the audience. Now the audience went wild as SPB rendered this cool song “koorak kukkralli kere wa wa”. The best was the next song, the grand finale “santhoshakke” from Geetha. It was totally cool when he sang “Hai folks. Good evening. Happy mother’s day. Listen to the crowning music from your fabulous Sanjay”. Enough said. I should just let you experience yourself, the joy this song brings(click here to listen).
Here are some video links which you may enjoy. Thanks to those who uploaded these songs. These videos are really a gold mine.

Indian Movie Stars need to be more media savvy
Madhu Krishnamurthy - Tue, 05/04/2010 - 22:22
Sudeep is a well respected actor in the Kannada film industry. His arrival as a lead actor in the movie Sparsha was welcomed by Kannada cine lovers which was looking for some fresh talent. With his good looks and screen presence he has established himself as a dependable star and has also done his stint as a director. Such being the case I was terribly upset when I watched this interview of Sudeep on youtube (click here to watch the interview. It is on a Kannada TV, but they speak a lot of English). I thought he treated the interviewers with total disregard. I could not help conclude that his handling of the interview lacked finesse and professionalism. I have seen other actors fail to impress as individuals, not because they are not good individuals but they stop being themselves and start behaving arrogantly, once they acheive some amount of stardom.
Obviously this interview is a couple of years old and as such Sudeep may have left it behind him. My views are definitely not a personal comment on Sudeep. It is just that this interview is a typical representation of the mentality of many current Indian movie stars which is worth commenting about.
Now let's take some points raised in the interview. When asked about the success of recent hits like 'Mungaru Male' he was much more interested in denying credit to Ganesh the star of the movie than on talking about what led to the movie's success and learning from it. In fact Ganesh did have a great part in the success of Mungaru Male. Sudeep was upset that so much credit is being given to Ganesh for the success of the film. His comparison of Darshan and Ganesh was unwarranted. It sounds totally ridiculous when one movie star puts down another by saying "Darshan is 6 feet tall and Ganesh is juts 3.5 feet. avanelli ivanelli". I hope Sudeep recognises the irony in his view. Doesn't he know that irrespective of physical attributes the hero always beats the life out of the bad guy and his menacing bunch of 20 or more hoodlums armed with longs and machetes. More ironic was his denial of Ganesh's instant stardom with a reference to how much hard work a superstar like Vishnuvardhan had to endure before he was recognized as a star. We have not seen Dr. Rajkumar or Dr. Vishnu behaving like this in an interview. Even though they are from a previous generation, nothing stopped them from being snooty. But I am mindful of the fact that times are different now. Celebrities are in the public view more now than before what with 24 hour TV and Internet. Comparison is futile in such situations. But public life is as much an opportunity to present yourself impressively as it is a risk of revealing one's dirtier side.
The interviewers looked like very enthusiastic kids who were just eager to do a good interview. They asked pertinent questions. But Sudeep's demeanor was as if he was saying "I know what I should do and I know better than you ." They seemed excited to be given this opportunity to interview a star and he could have been encouraging. But he seemed to gain some satisfaction in putting down their views and questions.
I was impressed with the mild tenacity shown by the interviewers. In spite of being brushed aside by a domineering personality they kept pressing him on with their questions. The way the subject reacts to a question reveals a lot even if the subject does not answer the question.
The Indian film stars will do well if they can demonstrate the skills needed to present a professional public persona. I can't help compare this situation with the way the Nicole Kidmans, Tom Cruises and George Clooneys or the Obamas for that matter, charm the interviewer and the audience leaving a favourable impression.
Now that the world's gaze is falling more and more on the so called 'Bollywood' films industry, our stars will do well to learn that presenting oneself in a public forum is much different on the world stage. Self absorbed boorishness is not the way to go. A charming behavior with a touch of gentle humor sounds like a better choice. Eating Habits in Children
The behavior associated with feeding is not simple as it is thought to be. It takes more than “milk and bread” to satisfy the impulses and needs associated with the feeding process. Many so called “Behavior problems” in children are feeding problems. During early childhood, between 21 months and six years, children show varying degrees of food finickiness. This is fewer in the age range of seven to fourteen years. “Finickiness” denotes an active aversion for many or several specific articles of food. It is a problem considerably more often than insufficient appetite for food in general. This tendency sometimes grows with them as they grow and enter adolescence.
Under nourishment is a problem of early years of childhood and middle childhood, whereas Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa are eating disorders usually seen in teenagers; especially in young American women. This eating disorder of adolescent girls is more of psychological problem. Both of these are mainly because of this society’s attitude towards obesity and perceived glorification of “thinness” and “beauty”. This forces the young woman to “starve” and under nourish herself to be thin and look beautiful. But in reality this would lead to ill health and may even to death.
Obesity, on the other hand, is an eating disorder which can cause more severe health problems later in life. Obesity of children in the age group of seven to twelve years has a direct link to the obesity in their adulthood. Though American society equates “thinness” with “beauty”, 39% of American adolescents are in the category of obesity. These obese children, either in middle childhood or in adolescent are likely to suffer physically and psychologically because of the tendency of this society towards obesity. These individuals who are obese are more vulnerable to physical injuries due to the overweight and “gravity-shift”. The psychological damage is when the peer group rejects them or teases them. They become the targets of their own peer group’s bullying. this ‘hits’ very hard on a teenager’s emotional aspects.
A poor eater may manifest him/herself as early as twelve weeks. Some children are constitutionally poor feeders by usual cultural standards. They may also be underweight. But if their muscular tone is good, motor activity, motor coordination and intelligence are superior, there is nothing to worry about. They are often good sleepers too. Some children who are very sensitive to slightest change, may refuse to take milk from a bottle if the nipple is different. Preferences for certain food become fairly well by one year of age. For a toddler (between 12 months and 24 months) feeding himself is of main interest rather than how well he eats. But most of the time “mealtimes” deteriorate into power struggles between parent and child, resulting in tensions and feeding problems. Parents can avoid it by giving the child a feeling of mastery by helping him/her learn to feed him/herself. Some of these steps would help both in the process.
a) Parents have to consider the experience of “self feeding” and eating from the child’s perspective, since it is big-deal for the toddler.
b) Let the child dedicate the pace at which the transition from “parent feeding” to “self feeding” happen. If the child returns to parent in the middle of his self feeding meal, oblige him. If he grabs the spoon when parent is feeding him let him have his way.
c) Allow more time for each meal than expected, plan ahead, and be prepared for the mess. While a child is eating, he is not just eating, he is learning to feed himself. If parents rush through the mealtime, it will take away the enjoyment of feeding in the long run.
d) Parents shouldn’t make “food” and “love” synonymous. They shouldn’t ply an upset child with candy/snacks. Such parents have trouble with finicky eaters and want to use force or bribery to get them to clean their plates.
e) Not getting overly worried about nutrition by offering nutritious choices. Toddlers like to choose their food for themselves. By letting them select from a range of foods all of which are nutritious, both the parties will be satisfied.
f) Parents have to avoid viewing feeding as something very sacred and valuable, not wasting a bit neither played around. Feeding should be joyous experience and child learns the skill of feeding through “trial and error” and “hit and miss” policies.
g) Mealtime shouldn’t mean “hard to pass” time neither to parent nor to child. It should not be covered by any other activity, since feeding herself is challenging enough for the toddler.
h) Most of all. parents being models for their toddlers is what impresses the young minds very much.
Sometimes the food may be refused by the toddler because he may not be hungry at all or she may be too busy exploring the environment or even may simply be tired and needs rest. When the child doesn’t eat, it is important not to punish the child. On the other hand, the behavior of the child can be managed and turns around to positive thinking about eating, through activities. The activities like pretend games of shopping for vegetables, cooking food, serving etc would help in this regard. This way child will learn to readily accept most, if not all, foods. Children imitate adults, in some cases other siblings’ and parents’ eating behavior may have stronger influence on the child’s habits. Placing a “picky eater” at the table next to a child who has learned to enjoy all foods often helps encourage the picky child to try a variety of foods. Presentation of new foods first, when the child is really hungry might encourage the child to become acquainted with the new food.
The children in the age group of two to six are more frequently named as “finicky” or “fussy eater” than any other time. By two years child can name certain foods that she wants. Her affection is shown towards food too. It is best to allow these children to have “food jags” or “fads”- having “typical food” several days without any change. New foods are to be introduced slowly under new and pleasant situations. They don’t need and relish a great variety of foods. Even a good eater may turn to be picky by two years of age, which is typical at this age. They are very emotional. They are also moving towards independence which causes them to be bossy and demanding. They need to assert their will and they use food as a way to be more autonomous. Saying “NO” is a way of asserting their autonomy. And because food is such an important part of life, many children become tyrants at the table making an issue out of what they will and will not eat, how much and when. It is not hard to do, as most parents are vulnerable when it comes to food and very easy to manipulate.
So a preschooler prefers desserts and sweets, meat, fruits and milk on top of the list. They accept vegetables very slowly especially greens. Preschooler likes foods that requires more chewing (like raw vegetables, potato skin, meat on bone, etc). By the age of four or five, they learn more tricks to manipulate parents. Vomiting may be used as threat or as an act to dominate the environment. They enjoy having control over something and may even resolve to go on hunger strike to boss parents. However if the parent stays calm, and in control, refuses to engage in a food struggle with the child, and takes responsibility for what, when, and where the child eats to some extent, the situation turns around easily. Parents provide the menu, regularly scheduled meals and snacks, (structure is very important to children which makes them feel comfortable) children are to take the responsibility for whether they and how much. As long as parents provides healthy food in a pleasant setting on a regular basis their job is done. Dictating how much or which type of food the child actually eat will backfire and doesn’t really yield any result. When parents enforce and maintain this “division of responsibility”- children learn to be responsible for their own eating habits and eventually enjoy food.
Toddlers and preschoolers may be eating less, simply because their growth rate has slowed down and doesn’t require as many calories to sustain them, Toddlers can not be expected to eat three square meals everyday. Healthy children who are developing normally regulate their own eating habits unconsciously, so over a period of about a week or so their diet is fairly balanced. One of the most significant physical changes that toddlers and preschoolers experience is that they grow differently during these years than they did during previous years, They get taller more quickly than they gain weight. That is why most of the preschoolers look lean and thin. They begin to loose their body fat (commonly known as baby fat). A child who is energetic and good muscle tone, bright eyes, glossy hair and an ability to spring back quickly from fatigue is unlikely to be suffering from inadequate nutrition, no matter how traumatic their mealtimes are.
As a child grows older in middle childhood (ages six through twelve) the average body weight doubles and child’s play demands great expenditure of energy for which they need plenty of food. These years children usually eat a greater amount of food and eat it fast. Rarely a child might revise the timing of his large meal of the day. A school goer may take very little breakfast but eat heartily at supper time, this way they maintain the calorie intake per day.
Malnourishment becomes very obvious and takes its toll over the growing body in the middle childhood years more than the previous years. Malnourished children are shorter than well-fed ones. It takes some energy and protein just to stay alive and more energy and protein to grow. When a child doesn’t take enough food to sustain life and promote growth, latter is sacrificed to maintain the body. Good nutrition is also essential for normal mental, physical and social activities. Some studies in African countries showed a direct but complex link between the protein supplements in infancy and social interaction in middle childhood years. Those children who as infants had not received protein supplements tended to be passive or dependent on adults and more anxious in their middle childhood. Those who have received protein supplements were happier, livelier and got along better with other children. This finding supports the conclusion that poor nutrition leads to less activity. One study found that a child’s diet from birth to age two is good predictor of social behavior from age six to eight. The way this happens is very complex but it is a fact.
As children grow to be adolescents, the growth spurt of this developmental stage entails an eating spurt. Boys need more calories than girls do in these years due to the physical growth changes and the kind of activities. Protein is important in sustaining growth and teenagers like anyone else should avoid “junk foods”. Adolescents are prone to mineral deficiencies. Calcium, Zinc, and Iron are very important. Calcium deficiency in girls may cause serious problems later in life such as Osteoporosis in post menopausal age. Anemia due to Iron deficiency is common among American adolescents. Even a mild Zinc deficiency can delay sexual maturity.
Obesity is becoming one of the major problems of the younger generation. According to a recent study children develop a dislike of obesity between the ages of six and nine. This is largely because American society equates thinness with beauty. But it is astonishing that there are more fat children in the U.S. than ever before. Because of social attitudes these children are likely to suffer psychologically as well as physically. Hence most kids develop a typical attitude towards what they eat. Preoccupation with weight is becoming increasingly common among young children. They often refuse a favorite food in a fear of getting fat. More than 15% of adolescents are affected by this eating disorder in the U.S. alone. Obese teenagers tend to become obese adults, subject to a variety of health risks. It is a matter for serious concern, therefore, that obesity has been on the rise among adolescents. Between 1963 and 1980 there was a 39% increase in obesity and a 64% increase in super obesity among adolescents. This is caused by using the food for consoling oneself at the time of depression or indulging in too much of junk foods and sweets which give empty calories, sugars, and fats.
On the other face of the coin, are two eating disorders seen in young adulthood and early adulthood, especially in girls and women. These disorders are characterized by abnormal behavior which apparently arise from a determination not to become obese. They are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. This is grossly due to the unrealistic glorification of slenderness in particular. This cultural factor interacts with families and personal factors to make many adolescent girls and young women obsessed with their weight. By the end of high school more than half have dieted seriously, some never stop and some adopt bizarre eating habits.
Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder seen mostly in young women characterized by self starvation. This tendency might be seen in people of both sexes from the age of eight to thirties, or even older. But the typical patient is a bright, well behaved, appealing white female between puberty and early twenties. The symptoms include stopping of menstruation, thick-soft hair spreading over the body, patient becomes intensely overactive and may eventually die. This is a psychological problem. Anorexics are pre-occupied with food– cooking it, talking about it and urging others to eat, but they hardly eat themselves. They tend to be good students and model children but are often socially withdrawn, depressed and obsessive perfectionists. The cause is unknown, though it is considered as a reaction to extreme societal pressure to be “slender”. It is also seen as a psychological disturbance related to fear of growing up, fear of sexuality or extreme family malfunction. They are likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.
Bulimia Nervosa is the other eating disorder that is very closely related to Anorexia Nervosa. This also affects mostly adolescent girls and young women. Bulimic regularly (at least twice a week) goes on huge eating binges (consuming up to 5000 K.calories in a single sitting often in secret) and then purges herself by self induced vomiting, strict dieting of fasting, vigorous exercise or use of laxatives. There is some overlap between Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa, but both are separate. This is a depressive disorder and it stems from an electrophysiological disturbance in the brain. Psychoanalytic explanation is that the bulimics use food to satisfy a hunger for love and attention they did not receive from their parents. Bulimics report they felt abused neglected and deprived of nurturing from their parents.
The treatment for Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa includes getting them to eat, to gain weight and to live. Medication is used to inhibit vomiting and in extreme cases hospitalization and intravenous feeding are called for. Psycho-therapies are given to gain insight into feelings underlying their disorders through counseling, cognitive therapy, group therapy. Even family psychotherapy or some combination of all these are used to treat. Sometimes antidepressant drugs are also used in the hospitals during treatment.
Eating habit is a behavioral, physiological, and psychological problem, that might start as early as three months of age and might go on through out the life. In general the feeding problem may be of two natures: (1) Physiological Factor- i.e. specific allergies for certain food groups (like milk and diary products) or digestive weakness or even prolonged sickness. (2) Psychological Factor. The feeding problem may indicate variety of concerns in a child’s life. Food and process of eating have many psychological meanings. Food is a symbol of intimacy and sharing. Sometimes it is used to satisfy cravings that reign deeper than mere physical hunger. Under-eating and over-eating, both are symptoms of anxiety. Feeding difficulties may be an expression of anger (taking revenge on parents or siblings by refusing to eat) or fear (dreads the thought of going to school, so the child has no appetite for breakfast). Refusing the food may also be a means by which a child asserts himself or calls attention to his needs. One study has showed that food finickiness in boys may be linked with their “Dependence – Independence Struggle”.
In the early years of childhood and in middle childhood parents or caregivers are more active participants in the process of establishing a healthy eating habit in the child, than in the adolescent years. In early and middle childhood years, the children show these distinct behaviors to establish their sense of self, independence to reinforce their presence and importance. This attitude is to assert the emotional needs that is very important for their healthy development. Parents with a few tricks and good tactics like- adding undetectable vegetables to kids approved foods; allowing kids to pick vegetables from the garden, if possible; allowing them top participate in cooking; serving raw vegetable with dip as snacks and salads; juicing the vegetables and may be combining with fruit juices etc. These are only a few ideas. Parents can be creative in this area.
Parents by sticking to their responsibility of only providing their children good nutritional meals and not dictating how much the kid is going to eat, can get better results. Children like to have some responsibilities and independence, so let them have it and let them decide how much they want, when and what, as long as their demands are reasonable and nutritional. Occasionally rewarding and not bribing is a good idea. It should not be too obvious that the child loosed the joy of having food and eats his meal only to get the praise or reward. Deserts and sweets when become parts of the meal are more healthy for both parents and child. Encouraging the child to have good eating habit through our actions and having lot of patience is what counts in the long run. Once the children learn the habit of good eating, they rarely encounter other problems like obesity and Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa. Good eating habit, established in the early and middle childhood is the best foundation for building a healthy, happy and fulfilling life in the years to come.

Arts and Humanity – The Heart of life
“Humility brings us self confidence and self respect, and kindness helps us win over others through their love” (verse 827).
Dr. D. V. Gundappa, in “Manku-Thimmana Kagga”
(Translation by Drs. Rashi and Sampath, as “Dim-Tim’s Muses”)
What U.S.A. has undergone on 9-11, what India has been experiencing for the last half a century, and what this world is going through for over a century, are the effects of education without humanity and humility at its core. Education must be well rounded. It should make the person feel evolved, enlightened, and informed in many directions. Any education system that lacks this 360 degree vision will result in the generation that don’t have direction. The acts of terrorism, that shook the world on 9-11 is a result of a planned education to do exactly what they did, terrorise and kill fellow humans. The acts of barbarism in Jammu and Kashmere of India is the direct effect of well organized schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. They are humans, with a goal to kill other humans. It is pathetic that they are trained to kill innocence. What is the meaning of humanity? Are we becoming “savages”? How true it is today, that “Education is a method whereby one acquires a higher grade of prejudices” (Laurence J. Peter). It is unfortunate that we are witnesses to the changing face of Education. It was education that intrigued humans to think better. It is education that is making humans to think bitter. Why this twist? Where did we stumble? Probably the process of educating went wrong in desegregating intelligence and intellectual capacity. According to Jiddu Krishnamurti, “Intelligence comes into being when one acts in perfect harmony, both intellectually and emotionally. Now modern education is developing the intellect, offering more and more explanations of life… without the harmonious quality of affection…. The mind- the intellect- is satisfied with these innumerable explanations, but intelligence is not, for to understand there must be complete unity of mind and heart in action.…” (“Intellect Is not Intelligence” from ‘What Are You Doing With Your Life?’).
So, ‘Harmony’ is the key. Harmony of mind and heart, of brain and emotions. The two can mix with proper education, guidance by guru- a person who is well versed, knowledgeable, and respected. Guru is that person who can change a raw mind into a sponge, who can shape a muscle mass into a heart. Teaching is that process where this shaping happens. “Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths theater” said Gail Godwin. A well rounded education is that which makes a human feel complete. Complete in all aspects of life. Complete about life itself. Fulfillment and contentment is the goal of life and good education is the path.
On the contrary, there are teachers who train children to hate the world. That is what we saw in Afghanistan under Taliban government. Those young Muslim men who thought they were going to the heaven by hating the world, didn’t know the softness of heart. Those children in Israel and Palestine, who are ready to blast themselves with a ‘mass killing mission’ on mind have tuned their eyes not to see the blood as liquid of life. That is what is being taught in the Madrasas (Muslim religious schools) in Pakistan. Those terrorists, who were not aware of the worldly affairs, were made to think that it is their duty to set things right by wiping out members of another religion from the face of the earth. Hate has become primary part of their education. No forms of arts are taught in those Madrasas- the Muslim schools. No music. No love and respect for the world, the nature, the earth. Where the young minds are corrupted to take a biased stand, that society has a narrower path to move on. This is the root of Nazi government, the hatred towards other religion. They were ‘trained’ to destroy thousands of people, just because they were not of their own religion. In the early 20th century, then USSR had restrictions on Music composers, Artists, Writers, and such others. “Under Soviet rule,” wrote Ian Mac Donald, in his article ‘Music Under Soviet Rule’, “freedom of information was an alien concept. The Soviet state ordained truth through its total control of the Soviet media, a control which ran to revising this truth, often in quite contradictory ways, whenever the necessity arose.” Eric Roseberry, author of a short biography of composer Dimitri Shostakovich (1982), has recently voiced doubt about the post-Testimony conception of the finale of Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony as expressive of a forced, and therefore hollow, rejoicing (source: ‘Music Under Soviet Rule’). Same situations were there in China and Nazi Germany. China, being a communist country focuses on materialistic achievements more than performing arts, though supports sports and gymnastic schooling. Drama, theater, music and religious development is taking a back seat. Cambodia is yet another example of such country where true culture is taking a lash in the name of freedom and of revolution. People are punished for practising humanity, for keeping faith in each other, for trusting in the basic goodness of human heart.
This doesn’t mean that the general education system is the one to be blamed, around the world. It depends on what kind of education is given, in what context, and how. Gandhi said, in his autobiography, “The ordinary meaning of education is a knowledge of letters. To teach boys reading, writing and arithmetic is called primary education.… Carried away by the flood of Western thought, we came to the conclusion, without weighing pros and cons, that we should give this kind of education to the people. This education has produced vacant minds and manufactured servants for the Government. The products of our universities have become nincompoops.” A vigorous training education, manufactures military for the government. That is where Nazi got its power from. That militory power is the strength of Gen. Navaz Sherief in Pakistan. That is the power that hides Osama Bin Laden from the world. A strong power with a weak mind. A power that has the capacity to wipe the sorld in one swipe, withoue even second thought. This is where their education system has failed, in making them humans. The true purpose of education is to create a proactive mind. A mind that is open to other aspects of any situation. Look at the world without any biases. Like Aristotle said, “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it”. That is what we generally call broad-mindedness. We don’t have to accept and embrace an idea to let others have it. Only a well educated mind can be open enough to do so. To live and let live. But, what we see today is the opposite. A generation with a very narrow thinking, very selfish aspirations, and very definite biases. This will only give us soreness and sorrow, which is not understood yet, but we are seeing samples of it.
We, humans, come to this world to live. As intelligent species of all the creatures, we want to ‘lead’ a life. There is life and there is good life too. The difference is delicate, and to be found only by the heart. Heart is the source of all the fine arts that make life an enjoyable journey. Education, on the other hand, is a business of the brain. Logical mind with a dedication, is what it takes to achieve high goals, to be powerful, and to succeed in the realistic world. As we discussed in class, in “definition of success”, essay written by Korda, success spells materialistic acquisitions. Climbing the ladder of social status and showing myself as the most efficient person by hook-or-crook have become the parameters of success. On that basis, those who have made fortune through lottery can also be successful; those who cheated the general public, the government and made their life are successful. The officials of Enron, Martha Stewart, are then, very successful people, because they made more than their fair share of money and have name and fame too. Sadly, we stand witness to such downfall of morality, because when brain doesn't know the heart, there is drainpipe waiting to suck the humanity in. We have seen those who took more than their share, and those who lost everything bitterly. We are watching the business giants create an image to the government, the inner reality being totally different. Fall of Enron and scandal by Martha Stewart, are only examples. The government is not able to do much. They get to keep what they ‘earned’. Lost are those who lost their faith in the system. When we see these unfortunate events, I remember this quote “I prefer the company of peasants because they have not been educated sufficiently to reason incorrectly” by Michel de Montaigne (1553 - 1592). This is so true even today, though it was said over 400 years ago. Mere logical reasoning is the simple rule of good life.
I would like to conclude with some thoughts on well rounded education. “Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one” said Malcolm Forbes. An open mind has a wider vision, broader perspective, deeper sense of society, and higher levels of responsibilities. Only such open mind with 360 degree vision can be a true leader. Only such mind will foresee, and plan accordingly. In short, only such mind can and will become a statesperson or a scientist. It takes lot more than materialistic knowledge to lead a country, and similarly to lead a great research. A well rounded education must tie up age old wisdom with new scientific knowledge. Mind will evolve by drawing strength from both platforms. I would like to quote Dr. D. V. G., a great poet, scholar, and philosopher of India, “Like new shoots of spring on the aged roots of an ancient tree, when old knowledge is mixed with new innovations, new science rooted in matured wisdom, there is evolution of mankind” (verse 522, Dr. D. V. Gundappa, in “Manku-Thimmana Kagga”). When we are able to blend these two platforms harmoniously, then we need not have to seek anymore for the meaning of life else where.
Culture is the root of all the fine arts that we talk about. It taught us to draw, to sing, to narrate stories, to nurture the curiosity when traditional education was not formed. Humanity has come a long way without traditional education. Now with only materialistic education in focus, we are going away from humanity. Materialistic life has engulfed us to such a level that most of us don’t have time for any artistic appreciation, let alone express ourselves artistically. We enjoy the life in fast lane so much that we want to watch movies that are fast. We want to travel only in fast lane. We want to have lunch and dinner in a shortest possible time, without focusing on the art of cooking. We need to look at daily living as an art. Cultures that had this vision have survived for thousands of years on this planet and now they are being sidelined as slow and irrelevant. Only when we are rooted firmly in the safe grounds of these cultural system with arts, faith, and feelings, then we as mankind can evolve. Only with the harmony of the heart and the head that we can emerge as the distinct and the intelligent creatures of the universe. Only with humane we remain as humans, otherwise, we do not make much distinction with a logical machine such as a robot with an addition of cruelty and selfishness.

Cut Saar and Ganji - A generic recipe
Madhu Krishnamurthy - Sun, 03/14/2010 - 16:53
Before the recipe
So! why dont I start this blog post with a technique which comes highly recommended by speech coaches all over the world. Off course when I say world I mean America. It is not the world whose countries have formed that thing called UN. The technique of course is to 'Start your speech with a joke'. Once you have the audience relieved of their apprehensions of your lack of sense of humor you can get into your really serious drivel. By the time the audience realize that the initial promise was only a bait and switch technique you will have finished your speech and you can heave a sigh of relief now.
So I need a joke. Let's see. When I was in India this joke was being told sickeningly forever as if it were a new joke. More sickening was to see at least 90% of the audience laugh at this stale joke. People seem to have a knack for forgetting jokes. Oops! I have slipped a bit in using this technique since after about more than 150 words I still have not told the joke. So the effectiveness of my rant today is not guaranteed. If you do not use the trick in the way it is intended to be used, don't blame the creators if it fails. It is guaranteed only if it is the first thing you say. The only thing you are allowed to say before the joke is perhaps "LET ME START MY SPEECH WITH A JOKE". I am now worried because I have passed almost 2 paragraphs without getting to the goddamn joke. If you are still reading, either you are waiting for the joke or the joke was after all not needed to be the first thing at the beginning to hold your interest. ( not sure if it makes any difference that you are a reader and not a listener)
Now since I have lost the element of surprise I must warn you that the joke is pretty lame. I believe I already said that. So why don't we hold off on the joke... no lets get it out of the way. The joke is timely because the cold virus has touched the Silicon Valley including yours truly. I have been suffering from this disgusting cold for more than 11 days. After the third day I was deceived into thinking it had subsided, only to be blind sided with a knockout fever the same night. Things got slightly better after the 8th and 9th day. However, just when I thought the cold had given up and the game was over for it, I had to content with a stodgy rear gaurd resistance by the tail enders cough and headache on the 10th and 11th day. They carried the night 'not-out' and are playing for a draw today.
The joke is "Don't take medicine for common cold. It will go by itself after 7 days. But if you take medicines it will be gone quickly in just one week". I had warned you that this was not funny.
As was well established before now, last night I was facing a gritty onslaught by cough and head ache. On Face book I posted this blurb for my upcoming recipe for Cut saar-anna also referred to as daal rice, rasam rice by other similarly sick compatriots from India.
Here is the teaser "Steaming hot daal rice with the consistency of soup, generous sprinkling of grated green chilli, hing, jeera and mustard seasoning, salt a bit on the higher side. What does that say to you? To me it says 'wake up, you sick, coughing, on-and-off fevered, fellow'.
This blurb generated such excitement (along with some sympathy) I decided to put down my recipe for Cut Saar. The word Cut is used only to produce the Kannada sound kuT It does not mean anything.
Recipe for Cut Saar
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of (Ravi) rice
- 2 cups of Toor Daal
- Half a jalapeno, which is a fat Mexican chili which has a strong flavor of Indian Chili but is not as spicy. This is ideal for making menasina kayi bonda. Cut the jalapeno into 1/2 inch pieces so that you can separate them from your soup. Or chop it smaller if you enjoy eating them in the soup
- Half a spoon of Jeerige (jeera/cumin)
- Half a spoon of black mustard seeds
- 4 curry leaves
- 1/2 an inch of ginger - minced
- 1/2 spoon salt (3/4 if you like salty)
- 2 spoons of ghee or butter
- 11 cups of water. (the water needs to be split between Rice and Daal).
- 2 tablets of Extra Strength Tylenol or similar generic.
- Steam cooker gas stove, tongs, a pan big enough to make daal
Procedure:
- Take 2 extra strength Tylenol with 1 cup of water. Don't drink too much water. You need to save water for the rice and daal. Also better to avoid a bio break.
- Bake 2 cups of rice with 8 cups of water to make it soupy in a steam cooker.
- Bake 2 cups of toor daal in 4 cups water in a steam cooker. The daal is expected to be not too watery.
- At this point you should have run out of water (in your water container of course) . Else you did something wrong. Retrace your steps.
- Wait for the daal and rice to be done (indicated by 3 whistles on your steam cooker followed by 15 minutes of cooling period)
- Heat 2 spoons of ghee or butter in the pan in which you plan to make the daal. Don't use a small bandley (small frying pan). It means you have one more dish to wash.
- When ghee/butter melts add a pinch of hing, half a spoon of black mustard seeds and the chopped curry leaves.
- When mustard seeds pop add 1/2 spoon of jeera. Now you should be careful not to over roast the jeerige. So IMMEDIATELY after 10secs,
- dump daal into it.
- Add the minced Ginger to the daal.
- Add 1/2 a spoon salt. Boil for 5 min. Now turn off the stove
- Mix 2 measures of the above daal to one of measure of rice (assuming you remembered to cook it).
- When nobody is looking use your hands to mix the rice and daal
- It should have the consistency of a soup.
- Eat hot. ( Instead of 'Serve hot' as suggested by traditional recipe writers)
- To eat (or drink) use a soup bowl and a deep round spoon like they have in Chinese restaurants in India.
- It is very simple to make Ganji (or GnajooTa) from the same recipe.
- Skip making the daal. Cook 2 cups of rice with 8 cups of water.
- Add the seasoning to the rice. A minor update here. After you add the seasoning to the rice, you need to add the ginger and boil the Ganji for about 4 minutes after
